We spent three weeks roving from the peaceful farmhouse in France, to family gatherings in Blackburn, Holmfirth and Wales. A calming trip that primarily involved eating, sleeping, meeting with old mates and family.
Today is my first American weekend. So far it looks like it will involve the burning of a massive bonfire - with bouts of watching American television. Already I am looking out for signs of the recession, is America really melting down? From an initial glance at the local news reports, it would seem...er.... yes it is. There have been a bout of bank robberies in the past couple of months. People are running out of money and getting desperate. In fact, every news story seems to be focusing on some mental action that some nutter has performed.
Watch too much TV and you'll soon feel terrified. Lying on the massive couch and watching the news - I remembered a comment that Yann Martel once said in a book event in Hong Kong. He stood on a podium and asked us all to close our eyes and imagine that we were a deer standing in a silent forest. It's ears are pricked listening for possible danger. Now imagine that a massive earpiece is put on the deer's ears, which allows him to hear sounds from more than 100,000 miles away - and just imagine how terrified the deer becomes, to hear those sounds of danger suddenly burst into his world.
Watching American TV is a bit like that! Gotta keep it real and turn to the Comedy Channel before it all gets too depressing!
Anyway, I am proud to announce that Clare has at long last created a blog for herself. I will write my thoughts, ramblings and strange theories in here, with the occasional photo. When remarkable things occur, I will write about them. So, welcome to The Clare Chronicles! Now, must dash out and watch that bonfire.....
